HomeLink Pros Solar, a Santa Clarita solar company, is providing residents with a few tips on how to reduce energy use at home before electric bills inevitably increase over the warmer summer months.
“That’s one of the things that we try to do to separate ourselves from other companies out there, is not just give you cheaper electricity, but also help you learn how to use less,” said Mandy Rami from HomeLink Pros Solar. “There’s a lot of things that people are doing that they don’t realize is really using more energy than necessary.”
Over half of total electricity usage during July, August and September is from air conditioners, and increased usage costs are even more “painful” as a result of standard electricity rates being higher over the summer, according to Rami.
“There’s some simple things that you can do to save that money right away,” she said. “One of them would be where your thermostat is actually located.”
For thermostats that are next to a window or in a room that isn’t often used, Rami said that the temperature reading is likely irrelevant to the comfort level of the house.
By relocating a thermostat to a commonly used room away from windows, residents can help get a more relevant and accurate temperature reading, which has the potential to lower air conditioner use.
Additionally, setting the thermostat to a temperature it probably won’t achieve on a hot day makes the conditioner run nonstop, raising energy usage costs, according to Rami.
“If you put it at a more reasonable temperature, then the air conditioner will actually click on and off throughout the day,” she said. “It’s recommended that you leave your thermostat at 78 degrees and put ceiling fans in the rooms that you hang out in.”

This setting on an air conditioner can go a lot farther when it’s combined with an inexpensive ceiling fan, which Rami said can run nonstop for a whole month for the same electricity cost as using an air conditioner for only 10 hours.
Rami also noted that lowering the pool pump’s number of running hours can also help reduce unnecessary electricity usage.
“Your pool is usually set to clean and filter more hours than what’s really necessary,” she said. “Your pool pump is probably set right now to clean for six to eight hours, and you could probably get away doing it in three to six hours.”
The filter can first be set for three hours, and then an hour can be added as needed depending on how the pool looks, according to Rami.
“If you’re not seeing your pool get green or slimy, it’s got plenty of time to filter,” she said.
The last tip Rami has on how to reduce energy use at home is to those who charge electric vehicles at their house.
“A few things that you can do with that would be to plug your car in at night, and then making sure that if you’re going to charge a regular vehicle at home, you’re going to want to upgrade your electric plug to a 220 plug,” Rami said.
Those who use the more conventional 110 plug will find that it usually takes twice as long to charge and uses up more electricity than a 220 plug, according to Rami.
These tips can help people reduce their energy usage at home, but making the switch to solar with HomeLink Pros Solar is recommended for anyone who wants to see a drastic cut to their monthly electricity costs for nothing out-of-pocket.
